Introduction to Windows (Operating System)

Good Morning boys.
The Topic of discussion today is
                      "Operating system- Facts and Types"
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Google Meeting ID for today's class is:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Operating System is

  • the most important type of System Software
  • acts as an interface between user and hardware resources of a computer
  • is incharge of controlling all important components of a computer system
Four important components of a computer system are :-
  1. Hardware :
  • those components that can be seen and touched
  • example - memory, monitor, keyboard and CPU
      2. Operating System :
  • type of system software
  • controls and coordinates the use of hardware resources of a computer system
  • example - windows, linux, macintosh, BOSS
      3. Application Programs :
  • refers to the programs developed to solve the computing problems of the users
  • example - microsoft word, microsoft powerpoint, microsoft paint
      4. User :
  • person who uses the application software installed on the system
  • also known as "Liveware" or "Humanware"
  • interacts with the operating system through Character User Interface (CUI) or Graphical User Interface (GUI)
Need for an Operating System :-
  • Recognizes the input entered by the user (such as a key press or a mouse click)
  • Displays the generated output on the computer screen
  • Keeps a record of the files and directories on the hard disk
  • Manages the various peripheral devices of the computer (such as printers and scanners)

Types of Operating System

User Interface :
  • User Interface comprises of everything the user can use to interact with the computer.
  •  It is basically the means by which the user and computer system can interact using input and output devices.
  • GUI and CUI are two types of User Interfaces
  • GUI stands for Graphical User Interface while CUI stands for Character User Interface.

GUI: GUI stands for Graphical User Interface
  • This is a type of user interface where user interacts with the computer using graphics
  • Graphics include icons, navigation bars, images etc.
  •  Mouse can be used while using this interface to interact with the graphics.
  • It is a very user-friendly interface and requires no expertise. Eg: Windows has GUI.

CUI: CUI stands for Character User Interface
  • This is a type of user interface where user interacts with computer using only keyboard
  • To perform any action a command is required
  • CUI  was used in most primitive computers.
  • Most modern computers use GUI and not CUI.
  •  Eg: MS-DOS has CUI.
