Intro to Computer System-functional components

Good Morning students

Let us take 2 minutes to calm our mind.🙏🙏

May God bless you

By the end of this session you will be able to

  • Identify the various functional components of a computer.
  • In very simple words define- System unit, monitor, mouse, keyboard, motherboard,CPU and memory.
  • Identify the steps involved in basic working of the computer- input, process and memory
  • Diagrammatically explain the components of a computer.

Functional Components of Computer System

A basic computer system consists of the  following components:

  1. System unit- consists of
    • Motherboard
    • hard disk
    • RAM (Random Access Memory)
    • CPU(Central Processing Unit)
    • Sound Card
  2. Monitor
    • displays the output of a computer
    • Looks like a Television
    • Can be cathode ray tube(CRT), liquid crystal display (LCD) and light emitting diode (LED)
  3. Mouse
    • Is a pointing input device
    • Perfectly fits in the palm
    • Allows to click a button and placing cursor at a specific position on the screen
  4. Keyboard
    • Is an input device
    • Contains keys to feed information into computer
  5. Two types of hardware components
    • Essentials for working on a computer - CPU, Hard Disk ,Memory, Keyboard, Mouse, Monitor and Motherboard
Motherboard:-The motherboard is the main circuit board of micro computer. it is also know as main board  or system board.

CPU:-The CPU is the central electronic chip that determines the processing power of the computer.
Memory:-Memory is the part of computer that temporarily store application documents, and system operating information.

    • Non Essential-Printer Scanner Modem Speaker Pen Drive Webcam

Working of a computer

                   Computer follows INPUT-PROCESS-OUTPUT model where

Input-refers to the process of feeding data or instructions in a computer

Processing-refers to the work done by the computer with the help of Hardware and Software

Output-refers to the result ie obtained when the computer processes the input

EXERCISE
  1. What does the system unit comprise of?
  2. What is the model on which the working of the computer is based?
  3. Write notes on the following:-
    1. Input
    2. Processing
    3. Output
  4. Write short notes on the following:-
    • Motherboard
    • CPU
    • Memory
    • Monitor
    • keyboard
    • Mouse
  5. What are the two types of hardware units? Give example.
