Lets become familiar with the following terms:

The Operating System (OS) is
  • the most important program that runs on a computer.
  •  Every general-purpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs and applications
  • It perform basic tasks, such as recognizing input from the keyboard, sending output to the display screen, keeping track of files and directories on the storage drives, and controlling peripheral devices, such as printers.
  • For large systems, the operating system has even greater responsibilities and powers. It is like a traffic cop  it makes sure that different programs and users running at the same time do not interfere with each other.
  •  The operating system is also responsible for security, ensuring that unauthorized users do not access the system.
Examples- Windows, Mac, Linux, BOSS etc.

1. Desktop in Windows

When referring to an operating system or GUI (graphical user interface), the desktop is a system of organization of icons on a screen.

Windows 7 Desktop

Start Button in Windows

  •      The Start button in Windows is a small button that displays the Windows logo and is always displayed at the left end of the Taskbar.
  •  You can click the Start button in Windows to display the Start menu or the Start screen.
  • You can right-click the Start button in Windows to display a pop-up menu of shortcuts to various features, windows and control panels on your computer.
  • To open any one of these items, click the desired command in the pop-up menu that appears.
  •  A handy shortcut in this menu is the “Shut down or sign out” command. If you roll your mouse pointer over this command, you will see the options that you have to shut down or sign out of your computer

Task Bar in Windows

  • The taskbar is an element of an operating system located at the bottom of the screen.
  • It allows you to locate and launch programs through Start and the Start menu, or view any program that is currently open.
  • It also allows them to check the date and time, items running in the background through the Notification Area, and with early versions of Windows access to the Quick Launch.

Icon in Windows

  • An icon is a graphic image, a small picture or object that represents a file, program, web page, or command.
  • It help you execute commands, open programs or documents quickly.
  •  To execute a command by using an icon, click or double-click on the icon.

Files in Windows

  • A file is an object on a computer that stores data, information, settings, or commands used with a computer program.
  • In a GUI (graphical user interface), such as Microsoft Windows, files display as icons that relate to the program that opens the file.

Folders in Windows

  • A folder, also called a directory, is a special space used to store files, other folders, and shortcuts on a computer.
  • It is used to place related files and sub-folders under a named location called FOLDER.
  • When browsing the files on your computer using a file manager, such as Windows Explorer, the icon for a folder should look similar to the image.
