Today we will take up the types of computers in continuation with the previous discussion and also see the new ways of communication in today's times.

By the end of the session today, you will be able to
- understand the basics of a super computer- physical and operational aspects
- understand the basics of a self-destructing computer- physical and operational aspects
- understand the basics of an embedded computer- physical and operational aspects
- understand the purpose and methods of communication in modern times.
Types of Computers(contd)
Supercomputer:-
- consists of a large number of processors
- occupies huge amount of space
- can process trillions of operations per second
- Is very expensive
- Example- supercomputer is used for weather forecasting
- PARAM was the first Supercomputer made by India.
Self- destructing Computers:-
- Cyber Group Network (CGN) developed first self destructing computer
- name of the device is C-4 chip
- a computer equipped with C-4 chip is discovered missing or stolen, the computer's owner will be able to call a toll free number which gives the owner options
- track the computer
- track the computer and then retrieve data from its hard drive
- track the computer and then destroy the hard drive and mother board
- notify the authorities
Embedded Computer :-
- present in television, washing machine, plane, self driven car
- is an inbuilt pre-programmed computer that performs some specific tasks
- example : fully automatic washing machine has embedded circuit to perform all the operations needed for washing of clothes such as washing, rinsing, drying, etc.
Overview of Communications Technology
Communication technology :-
- means a number of programs and equipment that are used to process and communicate information
- also known as Information Technology
- influences communication, business and society
- has made exchange of data and information more efficient
Common and popular communication technologies are :-
- INTERNET -
- a global computer network providing a variety of information and communication facilities,
- consisting of interconnected networks using standardized communication protocols.
- E-MAIL -
- Short for electronic mail, e-mail or email
- is information stored on a computer that is exchanged between two users over telecommunications.
- It is a message that may contain text, files, images, or other attachments sent through a network to a specified individual or group of individuals.
- SHORT MESSAGE SERVICE (SMS) -
- SMS is a text messaging service
- component of most telephone, Internet, and mobile device systems.
- Can be sent locally, nationally or internationally.
- VIDEO CONFERENCING -
- Video conferencing is a technology that allows users in different locations to hold face-to-face meetings without having to move to a single location together.
- This technology is particularly convenient for business users in different cities or even different countries.
- It saves time, expenses, and hassles associated with business travel.
- CHAT SERVICES -
- Chat is a text-based communication
- It is live or in real-time.
- For example, when talking to someone in chat any typed text is received by other participants immediately.
- In contrast, other text-based communications such as e-mail are modes of correspondence that are not real-time.
- BLOGS -
- The term "blog" is short for "weblog," which refers to an online journal.
- Blogs began as personal mini sites that people used to record their opinions, stories, and other writings as well as photos and videos.
- As the web has grown and changed, blogs have gained more recognition and merit.
- DOCUMENT AND CALENDAR SHARING SERVICES -
- Document sharing allows you to share documents with others in real time.
- Example - Google Document that can be shared with other people and can be accessed by them at any time.
- Calendar sharing service or tool is used to freeze and share plans in an organised manner by companies or entrepreneurs.
- A well organised calendar can help you to become aware of where you need to be and what you need to be doing at a particular time.
- Example - Google Calendars can be shared with business partners.
